Here, in the first sentence
Louise and Neil had been dating for three years.

Grammar point: 1.7) Past perfect progressive:

Formation of the tense:

had (not) + been + ing form of the verb.

When to apply this tense?

This tense is used to express an activity that unfinished or recently finished at the time. We can also expressions ‘since’ and ‘for’ to show unfinished time.

In our example:
Here, at the beginning of the story
Louise and Neil had been dating for three years.

This tense is used in the story to show Louise and Neil still dating means the activity of dating is unfinished.

  More Examples:

      1)    We had been waiting for my friend for an hour.
      2)    Sanjana had started walking at 6:00 am and it’s 6:30 am she  had been still continued walking.
      3)    I had been working on my blog for the last two days.


Grammar point: 1.7.1) Past perfect progressive:

Asking questions with past perfect progressive tenses same as present perfect progressive tense, in past perfect progressive we replace helping verb ‘have/has’ to ‘had.’

Forming Questions

Forming short answer questions.

Structure:
Had + Subject + been + -ing verb

Question- Had Louise and Neil been dating for three years?
Possible answers
Ans.        - Yes, they had.
Ans.        - No, they hadn’t.

Forming questions answer for more information rather than yes-no:

Structure:
Wh-Question word + had + Subject + been + -ing verb form

Wh-words list:
Who
What
Where
How
Which

Question- Why had you been sleeping a lot lately?
Ans- We had taken the bus.

Similar questions:
What had Adam been doing yesterday?
Where she had been working before here.

Similarly way we can form question answers in whatever wh-words are.
