In this blog, we will cover the remaining portion of intermediate grammar. Our topics are Past participle and the use of ‘Since’ and ‘for.’

Grammar point: 1.1) Past participle:

To understand better, first, we have to get the idea of different forms of English verbs in use. These are shown below:

As we can observe from the table, there are mainly two types of verbs i) irregular and ii) regular. The few examples are of irregular verbs i. e. go-went-gone and Boldly marked verbs are regular verbs. The regular verbs can be formed by just adding d/ed in the end. The last column indicates Past participles. Note that these are some examples of verbs there are plenty of available.

Important Rules:

-The Past Participle cannot stand alone in the sentence without helping verbs.

Here is an example:

 Wrong:
I swum in the sea.
 Right:
 I have swum in the sea. (Present Perfect Tense)
 I had swum in the sea.   (Past Perfect Tense)

·       It needs helping verb have/has or had.

We use these words (Since and for) to connect past to present. In simple words to share past experiences such as last vacation or trip we use ‘since’ or ‘for’ to show how long we stayed or when you started your trip etc. Now you are familiar with why we use ‘since’ and ‘for’ we can shift gears to use it accurately. Let’s see one-by-one.

Since:

It is used in the sentence when we want to talk about the specific time at an event started.

For instance,
-My brother has started learning a new language since 2012.
-My brother has started learning a new language since summer.
-My brother has started learning a new language since last week.
-My brother has started learning a new language since he was 15.

NOTE: ‘Since’ can come first in the sentence.
-         Since 2000 the level of the sea around the world has increased significantly. 

 For:

It is adopted when we need to show the length of time since something started in the past.

For instance,
-My brother has started learning a new language for a week.
-My brother has started learning a new language for 5 days.
-My brother has started learning a new language for 6 months.

NOTE: ‘Since’ can come first in the sentence.
-         For 2 years the company had been developed exponentially.
